Apple is gearing up for its upcoming iPhone series launch at the Wonderlust event, scheduled to commence at 10:30 PM IST https://www.apple.com/in/apple-events/. In an intriguing development preceding the launch, Bloomberg has reported that Apple intends to sell iPhones manufactured in India to global markets, marking a significant milestone for both Apple and India. Prior to this move, Apple primarily sourced iPhones from China, but pandemic-induced disruptions have prompted the tech giant to diversify its supply chain and turn to emerging markets like India.
This launch will mark the first time in history that Apple will offer new iPhones made in India on their launch day. While Apple has previously sold made-in-India iPhones, there were often delays in their availability, with production unable to match the pace of China. In the past, it took up to six months to release Indian-made units for sale, but last year, the wait was reduced to a few weeks. This time around, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are expected to be available right from the start.
The production of the iPhone 15 in India began in early August at the Foxconn factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. This milestone underscores Apple's strategic move to reduce its reliance on China for manufacturing. Currently, Apple's suppliers in India collectively contribute to about 7% of the total global iPhone production.
While Indian factories are reported to be manufacturing the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, it's worth noting that Apple is still reliant on China for the assembly of its premium iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models.
